[ EDIT ] - I'd like to mention the real title of this piece is "Uriel and the Ocean at the End of the Universe" but it would not fit on DA's title deal.
I can't believe I finished this today. I actually did the initial sketch like the 2nd day I was here in England, I think, and then inked it at some point. And I've been working on the digital version on and off ever since. Anyway, YES, FINALLY. People who have traversed my Scraps here on DA and the Sketchbook gallery on my website have probably seen alot of drawings of this guy, and here finally is a complete piece. This is Uriel, one of the 7 Archangel Princes He's one of the oldest Angels (Metatron is THE oldest), is in charge of the Cosmos, and was born of nebulae (god always seems to have to make living beings out of something natural/inanimate so there you is.) This is a tad of a break from what I've read about him. Uriel is usually the regent of the sun. That seemed too close to Lucifer's whole "Angel of light" thing to me so I started thinking, well whats the sun but a star? One of many stars. It seemed fitting to me. Outer space is both terrifying in its impossible vastness and weirdness and very beautiful and spiritual to me. Speaking of the sea, you may have noticed it there. It's okay if you don't see it at first, it's supposed to kind of blend in. See one night, a while ago, I dreamt I was flying through space. No spaceship or anything just me. I came across a vast ocean just floating at the end of the universe. And I thought to myself in the dream "this must be the ocean that god flew over". Cause see, the opening of the Bible reads: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light". Call me crazy but its always made me think water existed before god did. Or was just THERE and he had no hand in making it. I suppose I can think that cause I don't believe it, I just love religious studies and mythology. So yes, the image was really more about the ocean in space, but Uriel just makes things more interesting! I shamefully made the water in Terragen, with some touch up in Photoshop CS. The background could not have been possible without these awesome brush sets: [link] [link] [link] [link] India Ink on Bristol Board, an assload of digital work. |
