Artist's Comments

@_@ Finally. Finally done with this.

There were some points I almost abandoned it because the underpainting was weighing too heavy on the Bristol (I really need to get some big big watercolor paper, or even some illustration board T_T I can dream can't I?)

But yes! Ever since I did the Xmas pic of them people have wanted to see more of Kittika and Terith, and I've wanted to draw them more. So here they are. They're actually my two oldest characters (Milli's technically oldest, but she doesn't much resemble how she started out), believe it or not Kittika is probably at LEAST half a year older than Terith. I couldn't tell you for sure at this point, but they were originally roleplaying characters years and years and years ago and she was in the story long before Terith was. Terith also had a much more minor role in that RP story, ha ha, THAT sure changed.

At any rate, the background ended up more simple than I wanted it, I'm just not that good at rendering fine detail with paint, but I'm getting better. It works out in the end, it doesn't distract from the two characters.

It ended up a tad abstract though. The white on the rocks are supposed to be salt stains, as they're resting on some sea cliffs. I used oil paints for the moss on the ground and on the rocks and white acrylic paint for the salt stains and the clouds and stoof.

As for the image itself, I dreamt it up listening to "Time" by Sarah McLachlan:

Time here,
all but means nothing, just shadows that move across the wall
They keep me company, but they don't ask of me
they don't say nothing at all.
And I need just a little more silence
And I need just a little more time
But you send your thieves to me
silently stalking me
Dragging me into your war
Would you give me no choice in this?
I know you can't resist, trying reopen a sore

Leave me be, I don't want to argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
If I agree, well, it's just to appease you
Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for

You see love-- a tight, thorny thread that you spin in a circle of gold
You have me to hold me
a token for all to see
captured to be yours alone
And I need just a little more silence,
and I just need a little more time
The courage to pull away
there will be hell to pay
the deeper you cut to the bone

Leave me be, I don't want to argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
If I agree, well, it's just to appease you
Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for

Time here,
all but means nothing,
just shadows that move across the wall
They keep me company,
but they don't ask of me
they don't say nothing at all.

Leave me be, I don't want to argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
If I agree, well, it's just to appease you

Kinda makes me think of them. Kittika does find herself abruptly invovled with this character as they end up on the run from a common enemy she never asked to have. Terith being jovial and carefree and Kittika being as tightly wound as her bowstring they clash often. She hardly ever calls him by name, she just refers to him as "thief" (they met when he was trying to steal food from her in the woods).

Though I won't deny SOME underlying romantic tension builds between the two of them, but don't expect anything to come of it. I'm not one of those people who would end a story with "and they settle down and have lots of a little elf babehs and live happily ever after SQUUEE~!", real life is much much much more complicated than that, and it gets in the way of alot of things that could have been.

So this is pretty much what I'm trying to depict here. She's turned away from him, trying not to even look at him, lost in her own thoughts. You can see how gaurded she is by the way she's still holding her bow ( T_T I drew a decent bow too. I know, I can't keep the style of it consistant.. or the color scheme of her clothes... I'll work harder in the future). Terith on the other hand is basking in the sun, enjoying the breeze, not a care in the world. Yet he's got that strange little smile on his face, I wonder if he knows what she's thinking about.

India Ink, White Ink, Acylic, Oil, Marker, Watercolor on Bristol Board (with a clear matte spray finish).

I love her outfit the best. its really interesting to look at. I also love the way you painted it. Terith looks great too. i love it when people draw profiles. i find them difficult - cant get the back of the head to look right :P

i think the background looks fine. It took a little bit of looking to get used to tho. at first i thought "hmmm" but i think that was because Kittika blends in with the rocks too good while Terith is way out there. I do like how Terith's colors are kinda muted while Kittika is really bright. HA its such a swap because of their personalities.

I wondered why you weren't submitting anything all week. :D Well, now I know!
This is SO COOL, too! I can't believe it was done with watercolors (Umm, it WAS done with watercolors, right?). They must be so hard to work with.

I love that you put Kittika in the foreground while Terith is visibly further back. It really adds interest, as does their varying poses and expressions.

The backround looks great, too! ^^ I know what you mean about it looking abstract, but in my opinion, that makes for a really cool effect.

Awesome job!

Quite an interesting contrast between relaxing and tension.
I never actually tried a real brush, but I understand it might be tough to add fine detail when using them for painting characters. Looks challenging.
I saw you used different paints for different effects, but I wonder how much of that is lost after scanning the page?

Yeah, Bristol paper do not take thick paint well at all, nor do they take any water well. Some investment would be good for your art. :)

Some of the underpainting techquie you used brought a nice effect, til you master them later.
