Holy crap what's this? I finally reveal the default anatomy of the angels? Yeah they really ARE androgynous
I say "default" anatomy though because after humans were created they had the ability to take the form of either gender if they want (as they can take the form of anything God's created) and of course that's what got Semyaza and the Grigori into so much trouble.
But now more about the image. I drew this last night, inked and colored it today. The main focus of this image was color and figure. I felt like doing some figure drawing I guess, it was a challenge to make Uriel look masculine and feminine at the same time though. I studied alot of poses in the figure drawing book I have (there were no photos of one of the male models lying on his back for some dumb reason so I hadda study the standing poses mostly) and I spent a long time working on and refining his body structure (of course only to reduce it to the smoothest, simple-looking lines. Ah cartooning). His basic pose is a purposeful parody on the painting The Birth of Venus by Cabanel: [link] , though I wanted him to look more like he was in the middle of waking up, stretching a little.
Uriel is the second oldest angel (Metatron is the oldest) and I think I've mentioned it several times before, God created him from nebulae (in my universe Heaven is far out in space and surrounded by nebulous clouds). I think I've also mentioned before that I find outer space to be very spiritual and infinitely fascinating. In most tradition Uriel tends to be regent of the sun, my depiction graduated to regent of the cosmos (sun seemed too close to Angel of Light [ which is Lucifer ] to me so my brain starting going in the direction of: "what else is the sun but a star?" ). I wanted to keep the angels with natural hair colors, but it was too tempting to make Uriel look like a newborn star.
And that's about it. I felt like doing some digital coloring, but I drew the lineart on watercolor paper so I can do a traditional version sometime if I feel like it.
Lineart - India Ink on Watercolor Paper
Color - Photoshop CS
P.S. Argh I'm tired and forgot to write what else I wanted to write. I worked on this illustration mostly while listening to "Deep Blue Sea" by Deep Forest, which also inspired my last image of Uriel: [link] . It's a fantastic song, I love it so much, and I found a sample of it on Deep Forest's website, so have a listen to 30 seconds of the song: [link]
Ah, it looks he's having or had a wonderful dream.
I wonder what it was about?
Anyway, I love it. It's so... calming. And seeing as I shouldn't be up at this hour, this sleepy-time picture is putting me to sleep! (Which is a good thing, mind. I need to sleep!)

Oh, and I still adore the way you draw wings.

I tried really hard to give him boy hips. C'mon they jut out and are positioned right at least...
